there's no better life switch to make during a recession than deciding to take out huge loans and heading off to grad school. thanks to the graduate program in international affairs at the new school, starting in August, I will have a program on which to drop some hard-loaned cash, as well as a locale and some colleagues with whom to do some serious contemplating on how to save the world in our rapidly shrinking internet-savvy global community!
after giving my brain a generous time frame of 3 years to slowly atrophy since my year-long stint at the University of Paris, I am slowly starting that process of toning it up again so to assure that my undisclosed amount of student loan money does not go to waste (just like a butt, if mistreated, the brain can become heavy and lazy, but can always be brought back to thrive as an active member of society with the proper conditioning). The application for grad school gave me a little jolt, but in general, between my mindnumbing corporate job and borderline excessive alcohol intake, i'm certain my brain has some serious saddlebags.
that said, here are some developments with my more recent brain activity...
1. I joined The Greene Hill Food Coop, which finds itself in the midst of that exciting 'becoming a legitimate organization' phase to be ready to launch a storefront by the end of fall this year! The idea of not having to wait for Saturdays for fresh, local, regularly priced produce is exciting. So I immediately lined up with the Governance Committee, which is in the process of putting together its bylaws and membership agreements - a good way to remind myself how to employ legitimate research skills. So if you love food and have some minor qualms with shopping at Whole Foods during the week because your local market is only open on Saturdays and you live near or around Fort Greene or Clinton Hill, join the Coop!
2. Trivia? I generally suck at trivia but had a rather successful experience the other night which resulted in 2 free shots of tequila for me. Apparently I know more about Indonesia and Papua New Guinea's history than I thought. Yay for free booze that you win with intellect!
3. Cultural events! Today is Bastille Day and thus i will spend the evening surrounded by legit Frenchies sipping Pastis and speaking in awesome guttural French about popular uprisings, French people's NewYorkophilia, and my Francophilia. In celebration of the storming of the Bastille, yet completely unrelated, here is the most brilliant and sexy pop chanson ever written starring the hottest French couple to grace le monde, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin.
